Blog

Under the umbrella of Refined Perspectives I still work with many of my original organizing clients for both organization and coaching services.  They are always asking for little tips and tricks to help them stay organized.  I have designed this blog to be more about ideas to help people stay on top of their space, time and tasks.  I hope you find it helpful

Speak Their Language

We have all met those people who just seem to "connect" with everyone they meet.  They are really good at quickly reading people and successfully use that skill both professionally and personally.  If you struggle to communicate your desired message, the problem often lies, not with your ability to articulate your message, but rather your ability to understand how your listener needs to hear  what your are trying to communicate.

Perfectionism vs. Organization

The ongoing myth about those folks who allow their disorganization to get out of control is that they are slothful sluggards who just can't get their act together.  The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of my clients are perfectionists.  When we think of perfectionism, we think order and neatness, but in reality perfectionism can often prevent people from getting and staying organized.  So how is this possible?

You see the nature of the perfectionist is to aim for perfection.  …

Checking Off Tasks - Is There Anything More Empowering?

For those of you who have a "to do list" that you check off each day, you already know how good it feels to put a check mark beside a completed item.  Nothing feels better, well almost nothing, than looking at a completed check list at the end of the day.  It may, however, surprise you to know that even those check list people often have routine things that they forget to do each day.  Things like making the bed, putting the dishes in the dishwasher, washing dishes, feeding the dog, (unless you own a dachshund, they will never let you forget), sort the mail and so many other little jobs around the house or office.

Nothing Ever Stays Organized!

Yes that is exactly right, nothing ever stays organized.  Like everything else in life, getting organized is not the same as staying organized.  Just like losing weight does not mean you will always be thin, organizing your home or office does not ensure that you will always know where everything is.

So "why bother?" you may be thinking.  Well the fact of the matter is once you take the time and/or spend the money on getting organized, it only makes good sense to do regular maintenance of the clutter that accumulates with everyday living.  …

Use Your Space the Way You Want To!

I admire people who do the unconventional.  Just because the world says something should be one way, does not always mean it's the right way.  One place that I notice that most people tend be reluctant to "buck the conventional" is in our homes and more pointedly in the formal dining room.  The least used room in most modern homes is that formal dining room.

Don't get me wrong, I love and regularly use my formal dining room.  I have a china cabinet filled with Royal Albert china and a cabinet with English teacups.  …

If Your Stuff Holds Fond Memories, Don't Hide it Away

I am always amazed at the number of things that people say is meaningful to them and yet are kept hidden away in an attic or storage facility.  I often work with folks who have things that are in boxes that are from family members who have passed because they just can't part with them.  But instead of getting these items out to enjoy, they hide them away.

I found some dishes for a client today, and when she saw them she had tears in her eyes.  …

When all Else Fails - Say "No" Creatively with iNo

Sometimes getting organized and leading a balanced life is a lot easier said than done.  All of us have both personal and professional obligations that need to be done everyday, all of which can get in the way of staying organized and balanced.  Something that many people have in common that can get in the way of leading that elusive balanced life is the inability to simply say "no".

I realize that we can't say "no" to the boss, the customer or client, at least not too often, but there are times in our lives that we say "yes" when our minds are screaming "no, I can't do one more thing"!  …

Visual Working Style - Color is Your Friend

Are you one of those people who has to see things in action to really understand how they work?  You are imaginative and creative? Do you have many competing ideas and projects going on in your head at once? Do you find it difficult to stay organized because you find it hard to stay with one task for any length of time?  Is your workspace filled with many projects at various stages of completion?

You are likely have a "visual work style" and you often 'see' items that stimulate new ideas and possibilities even in the middle of a completely unrelated project.  …

Take Advantage of January!

Every year January brings fresh new hope for all of us.  It represents a "starting over" point, a time to stop and reflect on last year's successes and failures and put them all behind us.  January is the month we get to start over with our diet, our exercise programs, our goals, and our lives in general.  January stands before us like freshly fallen snow, all white and ripe with opportunity.  So take advantage of that mindset.

Let January work in your favor.  …

Teaching Children to Pick Up After Themselves

I often hear mothers complain about how hard it is to keep their children's rooms and play areas clean and free of toys and clothes.  In fact many of my organizing jobs involve children's rooms.  If you want to give yourself back some time in your day, enlist the children to help keep all spaces clutter free.

Give everyone a ten-minute warning to tidy up before play or game time ends.  Most kids can pick up a space in 10 minutes.  …

It's Back to School - Are You Staying Organized?

So, the kids are back in school and the new school year is well underway.  With all the activities that kids are involved in, it is often difficult to help them stay on top of homework, schedules, books, assignments and life in general.

A good way to keep your kids organized so they are ready to "grab and go" in the morning, is to create a "staging zone" in your home.  A "staging zone" in the first place they put things when they get home at the end of a school day, and the last place they put them in the evening to be ready for the next day.  …

Gotta Love That Glitter!

I have done a lot of organizing for children.  I really like working with kids, they know what they want to keep and they usually aren't afraid to let a toy go to someone else to enjoy if they have outgrown it.  Plus they are hilarious!

Since it is summer and Mom's all over are looking for ways to entertain their children, I thought I would give you a quick "art supplies tip".  Kids love art projects of all kinds and that usually involves glitter.  …

What Does An Organized Office Look Like?

Many people use someone else's definition of organization, but I believe that is what leads to failure when it comes to being organized.  Instead I ask clients "how organized do you want to be?"

When we talk about getting organized people usually get an impression of a spick and span office with not a paper out of place. But my experience tells me that an office like that may work well for some, but be more distracting for others. …

Time Saving Organizing Tips

There are so many things to do, but time seems to be running out and you are already in state of panic thinking that you cannot get things done at the right time. If you find yourself facing this dilemma most of the time, here are some time saving organization tips that can help you lead a more productive and better life

1. Clean the desk that you usually use, either in the office or at home, of clutter. Since this is likely where your plan everything in your life or work, having a clear desk is essential to improving productivity. …

Put Stuff Away Ready to Use Next Time!

This tip is kind of in two parts and the title says it all.  However, many people have a lot of clutter in their home or office space because they simple don't make a habit of putting things away.  They tell themselves they will set aside some time later to "catch up" and the longer before that day comes, the more stuff stacks up and then the bigger the job becomes and consequently the chances of getting it done are greatly diminished.  …

Cut Down on the Cleaning

Well since Friday is traditionally my cleaning day I thought it's a good day for a cleaning tip. And yes, cleaning is part of organizing.

When we moved to the south, one of the first things that I noticed was that folks leave their outdoor shoes on in their home.  In Canada, mostly because there is always mud somewhere, we had indoor shoes or slippers.  Shoes or boots are removed at the door and neatly organized on racks at every door in Canada,  I found this practice really cuts down in how much I have to clean the floor.  …

Is Time Slipping Away From You?

From time-to-time we all feel like time is just slipping through our fingers.  There always seem to be more tasks than time and after a while we can feel like we will never get caught up.  When time is not managed one always seems to feel disorganized or "off".

When I work with people on time management projects, I often hear that the biggest problem that they have is just too many things to do and not enough time. Although for some people that can be very true, I find that many people really aren't aware of just exactly how there time is being spent each day.  …

Why is Paper So Hard to Organize?

I rarely ever work with a client that does not ask me about how to stay on top of the massive amount of paper that comes into their home.  The fact is that many people struggle with the problem of too much paper.  We all feel a little guilty about throwing away glossy magazines, newspapers and newsletters, but the fact it we can't keep it all.  Then there are the bills, advertisements, coupons and flyers. It all just keeps coming. …
