If Your Stuff Holds Fond Memories, Don't Hide it Away

I am always amazed at the number of things that people say is meaningful to them and yet are kept hidden away in an attic or storage facility.  I often work with folks who have things that are in boxes that are from family members who have passed because they just can't part with them.  But instead of getting these items out to enjoy, they hide them away.

I found some dishes for a client today, and when she saw them she had tears in her eyes.  She then began to tell me all the occasions her mother used them and what fond memories they held of good family times spent with her Mom.  I asked her why they were in the attic, and she said she had't really thought about it.  So we got them out and found a small corner of her china cabinet for some of them.  Other items we used to tastefully decorate a spare bedroom and guest bath.  Now every time she enters those rooms, she is reminded of her mother.

I have some items that I would never buy for myself, that are not exactly my taste, but they are from my mother or mother-in-law and I put them around the house.  They are a reminder of people that I not only loved, but learned much from.  Not only do I get to think about these two women every day, but my children do as well, every time they come to my house.

Many of my clients feel guilty for keeping things that are from parents or grand parents, so they hide them away.  But things that remind us where we came from are important to get out and enjoy.  Even the things that once made you wonder "what was she thinking" are valuable because they will bring a smile to your face.  It is important to remember those we love, they made us who we are, so bring your treasures out to enjoy.
